Position overview

As a member of the Information Technology Services team, reporting to the Manager, Corporate Information Systems, the Business Systems Analyst performs a number of complex technical duties, as well as administrative and customer service duties in support of the University's corporate information systems and services. The Business Systems Analyst leads the development and implementation, provides day-to-day support services, and takes primary responsibility for the custodianship of one or more of these corporate information systems.

Duties can include

  1. Provide effective and client focused support for corporate information systems by
    • analysing and resolving problems and providing assistance to support the day-to-day system requirements of business areas using corporate information systems
    • developing and maintaining the relationship with the Business System Owners, Application Administrators and System Users
    • meeting with clients at regular forums to discuss proposed enhancements to corporate information systems
    • liaising with other Information Technology Services staff to ensure that corporate information systems are user friendly, readily accessible and effectively maintained
  2. Consult with business areas of the University to identify system needs and prepare requirements specification documentation;
  3. Determine system design changes and implement these changes in consultation with functional and technical staff;
  4. Implement patches, upgrades and enhancements to corporate information systems;
  5. Liaise and negotiate with external vendors regarding matters related to the development, support and maintenance of the vendor's software application.
  6. Perform complex developments on corporate information systems, as well as implement, support and make modifications to these systems;
  7. Perform data conversion activities, assist in the creation and maintenance of queries and stored procedures and analysis of data.
  8. Develop policies, procedures, standards, statistics and documentation in relation to the University's corporate information systems. Execute all responsibilities in accordance with existing policy and procedures.
  9. Act as team leader for specific corporate information systems development projects, as directed by the Manager, Corporate Information Systems.
  10. Develop technical documentation, including the preparation and maintenance of manuals, and provide training, advice, assistance and instruction to clients in the use of the systems.
  11. Perform other duties within the range of skills normally associated with a position of this classification in an evolving environment.

Selection criteria

Essential
  1. Completion of a degree in computing, information technology or equivalent and work related experience in the computing and information technology sector.
  2. High level organisational and interpersonal skills including
    • demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of client
    • proven commitment to and ability to lead or work as part of a team
    • demonstrated ability to prepare documentation, follow procedures and maintain records for activities undertaken
    • proven ability to work with minimal supervision and use initiative in a high volume work environment
  3. Proven ability to deliver responsive and innovative client oriented service and to work with clients of varying levels of technological experience.
  4. Problem solving and analytical skills using structured methodologies to identify customer requirements, develop requirements documentation and implement innovative solutions.
  5. Experience in the development, implementation and/or support of corporate business applications using a relational database, preferably Microsoft SQL Server and/or MySQL.
  6. Experience in utilising one or more of the following applications development technologies within a work related environment
    • Visual Studio .NET
    • C#
    • Java / Javascript
    • HTML / XML / ASP / PHP
  7. Ability to prepare documentation, follow procedures and maintain statistics and records for activities undertaken.
To be appointed at Level 7, applicants will also need to demonstrate
  1. Project management skills and experience using computer-based project management tools.
  2. Experience providing support for all stages of the development life-cycle (including client advice and testing) within an enterprise application environment (e.g. PeopleSoft, SAP, Blackboard).

To ensure availability of fundamental IT systems and services, from time to time IT services staff can be required to work outside normal working hours and/or be rostered to be on-call.
