Applications are invited for appointment to this position, which will be offered on a full-time fixed-term basis for a period of two and a half years.
The Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI), a joint venture between the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania, was established as a centre of excellence in applied marine research to support the development and sustainable management of Tasmania's living marine resources. TAFI is part of the University's Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS).
The Research Fellow will undertake applied research assessing the impacts of gillnetting on by-catch and biodiversity as part of a Fisheries Research and Development Corporation funded study. The successful applicant will be expected to implement and participate in at sea fishing trials and catch sampling, undertake data analysis and reporting, liaise effectively with key stakeholders, provide scientific advice to Government, and contribute to the dissemination of research findings.
The successful applicant will possess a PhD or equivalent experience in marine biology, biological sciences or related discipline, and have demonstrated research experience, with experience in fisheries studies desirable. The successful applicant will be expected to participate effectively as a member of a small research team and have well developed communication and interpersonal skills.
The appointment will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $80,041 per annum (comprising salary within the range $51,208 $68,411 plus 17% superannuation, with the option of an additional 3% salary loading in exchange for 14% instead of 17% superannuation).
