Position Overview The Australian National University is seeking, as its 11th Vice-Chancellor and President, a leader of academic distinction, professional standing and vision.

The position will become available in mid 2011 on the retirement of Professor Ian Chubb AC, who has led the ANU with outstanding success since 2001.

The ANU is the leading research university in the southern hemisphere, with a far-reaching vision to advance Australia’s intellectual and creative capacity through broad-based research and research-led education.

In making this appointment the Council is seeking an exceptional academic leader who can inspire the ANU to develop further its distinctive national role in research, teaching and learning and public policy development.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate attributes including:

- academic distinction and high professional standing;

- significant institutional leadership experience with the strategic vision and financial acumen to lead a complex research, teaching and policy-engaged academy;

- strong understanding of the Australian higher education, research and governmental environment;

- outstanding communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships within the university community and with government, the business community and other centres of learning in Australia and internationally;

- commitment to excellence in research and education, and to intellectual creativity and human values; and

- exemplary personal qualities of good judgment, integrity, presence and energy.
