The Faculty of Arts at the University of Wollongong is experiencing a phase of growth and transformation. The Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies (BCMS), co-offered with the faculties of Commerce and Creative Arts, has been restructured and expanded to prepare graduates for the rapidly changing world of the communication and media industries. The internationally-oriented curriculum of the revised degree places particular emphasis on developing graduate skills in line with the Faculty’s strong interdisciplinary research focus on global social transformation. The Institute for Social Transformation Research, a University of Wollongong Research Strength, includes a collaborative research cluster with expertise in global media policy and the transformation of media and communication practices in everyday life.
The Faculty is seeking to make a number of appointments to teach in the BCMS, to conduct research in an area related to the degree and to other research projects in the Faculty, and to attract and supervise Honours and higher degree research candidates in these areas. They may also be asked to teach into other degree programs within the Faculty.
Successful applicants will be able to develop and deliver subjects in the core of the degree in the following areas: introduction to media and communication studies; media and communication research practices; media audiences; media policy and regulation. They should also be able to contribute to at least one of the majors offered by the Faculty: digital media and communication; international media and communication. Familiarity with other majors offered within the degree (journalism; marketing communication and advertising) is also an advantage. Applicants will be expected to have a strong research profile in one or several of the major teaching areas within the degree.
The Professor will take main responsibility for the co-ordination and development of the BCMS and its delivery at the Wollongong campus as well as in overseas locations such as Malaysia and Dubai. S/He will provide leadership in teaching and research and work with the BCMS team, the Head of School and the Faculty Executive to promote and enhance our programs nationally and internationally.
