Appointment will be full-time on a continuing basis subject to a probationary period. Considerations will be given to applicants who prefer a fractional appointment and/or wish to engage in clinical practice.

Salary:

Associate Professor - Academic Level D - $107,460 - $118,082 per annum or Professor – Academic Level E - $137,564 per annum. Level of appointment and commencing salary will be in accordance with qualifications and experience. Benefits include generous employer superannuation contribution and attractive options for salary packaging.

Position Statement 

Are you a Specialist Dentist with a passion for educating dental students and a strong research interest in Oral Pathology and Oral Biology? The School of Medicine and Dentistry has a regional mission to serve the health needs of northern Australia, with a focus on rural and remote, Indigenous and tropical health care. The Bachelor of Dental Surgery program commenced in 2009, based at the Cairns campus, this is a five year undergraduate degree that provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to become competent practitioners of dentistry.

The School is seeking an energetic and motivated individual who will take a senior leadership position in the development of the Dental program in the area of Oral Pathology and Oral Biology to include both teaching and research and with a clinical interest in the area of oral medicine. This is an exciting opportunity to join a motivated and enthusiastic multi-professional academic team, participate in the ongoing development of an innovative new Dentistry curriculum and pursue research opportunities relevant to your area of specialist expertise in a collaborative research environment. While established at the level of Associate Professor, for an exceptional appropriately qualified candidate consideration may be given to making an offer as Professor.

Duties and Accountabilities 

The appointee will be required to: 

  • Contribute to the leadership, development and management of the Dental Program within the School of Medicine and Dentistry;

  • Assist with the development of the dental curriculum;

  • Contribute to teaching and assessment of dental students in each year of the course and in clinical settings;

  • Lead or participate in a research program for Oral Pathology and/orOral Biology, and supervise post graduate students in collaboration with others;

  • Develop and enhance Dentistry as a high standard clinical service within north Queensland;

  • Perform such other duties as the Head of the Dental Program may determine from time to time.

Key Selection Criteria 

  1. 1. Higher degree qualifications in Oral Pathology; and eligibility for registration or special purpose registration as a Dentist with the Dental Board of Australia;
  2. 2. National or international standing in Oral Pathology, and/orOral Biology;
  3. 3. An established research record, including publications in high impact journals, in a specific field of interest;
  4. 4. Strong record of teaching in the area of undergraduate and postgraduate dental education;
  5. 5. Personal commitment to the strategic intent and values of the School of Medicine and Dentistry; and
  6. 6. Well developed inter-personal and people management skills.

Desirable Selection Criteria 

  1. 1. Substantial experience of rural and/orremote professional life, including delivery of specialist dentistry services in such locations;
  2. 2. Demonstrated empathy and respect for Indigenous cultures, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
