Introduction
James Cook University is ranked amongst the world’s best (top 400 universities in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking of World Universities 2008) and is the second oldest university in Queensland. It is recognised for the strengths of its teaching programs and high calibre research. It employs over 3000 people across its multi-campus facilities. With a student population of over 15,000, JCU is the foremost provider of professional graduates for northern Queensland. The main campuses in Townsville and Cairns are located close to a diverse range of natural environments including the reefs and islands of the Great Barrier Reef, pristine rainforests, inland savanna and Cape York Peninsula’s vast wilderness areas.

Background
1960 – University College (Townsville) is gazetted
1970 – James Cook University was inaugurated in Townsville by Queen Elizabeth II. The University is named after the 18th century British navigator and explorer, Captain James Cook, who chartered the east coast of Australia in 1770.
1987 – Cairns Campus opened
1995 – JCU Cairns relocated to new campus at Smithfield
2003 – JCU Singapore was founded, giving the university a presence in Asia.
2006 – Campus in Brisbane opens, catering to international students
2008 – release of reconciliation statement
Campuses:
JCU is a vibrant, multi-campus university. The tropical northern Queensland cities of Townsville and Cairns provide the locations for JCU’s main campuses, with smaller study centres in Brisbane, Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island. Off shore, JCU has a campus in Singapore and delivers courses through education partners in Asia and the Pacific.

JCU offers nearly 300 undergraduate and postgraduate courses that cover a diverse range of disciplines including arts, business, creative arts, dentistry, education, engineering, information technology, health sciences, law, life sciences, medicine, psychology, social sciences, and the formal sciences. Undergraduate awards include diploma, bachelor’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees with honours and joint bachelor degrees. A growing number of subjects are available externally, or by intensive block mode.
