Introduction
Deakin University is an Australian State Government body which generates its income from the provision of higher education in Australia. In 2005 Deakin University employed 2,609 people throughout its operations. Deakin University has five campuses located in Geelong, Warrnambool and Melbourne, where its central administration is located.
Background
1974 - Deakin University was established by the State Government of Victoria to create a regional university in Victoria. Deakin absorbed the Geelong campus of the then State College of Victoria and adopted some of the academic subject areas of the independent Gordon Institute of Technology
1977 - Deakin enrolled its first students at its Waurn Ponds campus.
1986 - Two programs for Koories were introduced, the Koorie Teacher Education Program (K.T.E.P.) and a final year program for postgraduates.
1990 - Deakin merged with the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education as part of reforms to higher education.
1991 - The Institute of Koorie Education was established.
1992 - The Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (V.A.E.A.I.) / Deakin Higher Education Agreement, was established.
Deakin merged with Victoria College as part of the reforms to higher education. Victoria College's Toorak Campus became part of Deakin's property holdings, and its name was changed to Melbourne Campus at Toorak.
Deakin University was the first Australian university to introduce as part of its core activities the upgrading and retraining of people in the workforce.
1993 - Deakin Australia, now DeakinPrime was established to establish and manage constructive and creative educational relationships with corporations, government agencies and associations.
1995/1996 - Deakin won the Good Universities Guide University of the Year award for use of technology in education.
1997 - The Geelong Waterfront campus opened.
1999/2000 Deakin won the Good Universities Guide University of the Year award for its partnerships with industry.
2006 - Melbourne Campus at Toorak was sold to a joint venture between Hamton and ISPT No 3 Pty Ltd.
Campuses:
Melbourne Campus at Burwood. The Melbourne Campus at Burwood is located in Melbourne's eastern suburbs alongside Gardiner's Creek parklands.
Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds. The Geelong campus is Deakin University's foundation campus located on the western edge of the historic port city of Geelong, 72 kilometres south west of Melbourne.
Geelong Waterfront Campus. The Geelong Waterfront Campus is Deakin's newest campus located on the foreshore of Corio Bay, in the central business district of Geelong.
Warrnambool Campus. The Warrnambool Campus is set on 114 hectares on the banks of the Hopkins River, at the end of the Great Ocean Road approximately three hours from Melbourne.
Deakin University also has liaison offices in India and Indonesia to help interested students with: Course advice; Career counselling; Application procedures and Information about studying in Australia.
